The Joints Fail Before the Brick Does
Coping lives in the hardest spot on the property. It is splashed with treated water from one side and rain from the other, baked by sun, walked on all summer, and put through freeze-thaw every Mid-South winter. Almost nothing else on a house takes that combination.
What gives out first is nearly always the mortar joints, not the units. Once a joint opens, water runs behind the coping instead of off it. That water undermines the bed the units sit on, and the edge starts to rock, lift, and eventually lose bond entirely — which is when it becomes a trip hazard at the edge of a pool.
Caulk over an open coping joint buys you a season. The repair that lasts is masonry: cut the failed joints out, re-set anything that has moved, and repoint with mortar that can live wet.

What Is Pool Coping?
Pool coping is the finished masonry rim along the top of the pool wall — the edge you sit on, push off from, and walk around. Around Greater Memphis it is usually brick, natural stone, or precast units set in mortar, often with a bullnose profile so there is no sharp edge at the water.
It is doing three jobs at once. It caps and protects the top of the pool shell, it sheds water away from the joint between shell and deck, and it is the surface people actually touch. When coping fails you lose all three at the same time — which is why a small open joint is worth dealing with early.
Coping is not the deck
The coping is the rim at the water's edge. The deck is the patio around it. They fail differently and get repaired differently, though we often do both on the same visit.
When Coping Needs a Mason
You do not need to diagnose it yourself, but these are the things worth calling about:
- Open or missing joints — you can see daylight, or fit a fingernail into the gap between units.
- A unit that rocks or sounds hollow when you step on it. That one has already lost its bond.
- A step-up between sections where the edge is no longer level — a genuine trip hazard at the worst possible spot.
- Cracked or spalled faces, especially on the pool side where the units stay wet longest.
- Caulk that keeps letting go. Repeated caulk failure usually means the masonry underneath moved.
The water tells on it
If the level drops faster than evaporation explains, water is getting past the edge somewhere. Coping joints are a common route.
How We Repair Pool Coping
The same masonry discipline we bring to a chimney or a set of steps, adapted for an edge that stays wet.
- Sound the edge. Every unit gets tapped. Hollow means the bond is gone underneath, even where the top still looks fine.
- Lift what has moved. Loose and settled units come up so the bed can be cleaned out and rebuilt properly, rather than shimmed and hoped for.
- Cut the joints out. Failed mortar is cut back to solid material, not scratched at the surface. A joint that is only surface-deep will open again the first winter.
- Re-set level. Units go back on a fresh bed, levelled with each other and with the deck so there is no lip to catch a foot.
- Repoint for wet service. Joints are packed full and struck flush so water runs off the edge instead of standing in a recess.
- Rebuild what cannot be saved. Cracked and missing units are replaced, matched to the existing coping as closely as the material allows.
